About Us
Barrett Educational Centers (BEC) were born out of a need to provide essential services to students with IEPs and anyone struggling to close academic gaps exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. We believe that before academic acceleration can occur, foundational skills in reading, math, and executive functioning must be cemented into the learner’s knowledge base. Homeschooling assistance is available.
BEC will provide a special educator to work with homeschool parents to help pinpoint areas of need and understand their child’s individual learning style. Curriculum guidance can also be provided as needed. Additionally, IEP advocacy services are offered as well, to help provide a full and complete educational experience for students with IEPs and 504s.
Barrett Educational Centers are an exceptional tutoring company for exceptional children. We truly are a special place to learn!
Our Mission
Barrett Educational Centers' mission is to provide a quality education and a strong foundation for every learner. We are committed to creating a strong partnership between families, community, and school staff.
Our Philosophy
The primary belief at BEC is that EVERY child can learn and it’s their fundamental right to be afforded the opportunity to receive a quality education that meets their individual needs. Traditional education focuses on rigor at the sacrifice of creating a strong foundation. BEC focuses on developing a strong foundation so that scholars are able to handle the academic rigor they’ll encounter throughout their middle and high school careers. Scholars will leave BEC with the tools they need to be successful in life.
About The Founder, Elizabeth Barrett, M.Ed
Elizabeth received a Bachelors of Science in Marketing from Delaware State University; a Masters in Education, and a graduate certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorders from the University of Central Florida. Education has always defined who Elizabeth is. Since 2005, she has worked in the public school system as a special education teacher. Elizabeth started out as a self contained classroom teacher in central Florida then went on to become a 5th grade Co-teacher before moving to North Carolina. Since 2015, Elizabeth has worked as a certified cross-categorical resource teacher in title-one schools within Wake County.
Elizabeth knows the disparities students with IEPs face within the general education setting. Raising a son with an IEP allows her to see first hand the struggle he goes through on a daily basis because his needs are not being adequately met in school.
Barrett Educational Centers were created from a desire to help close an ever widening gap that students with IEPs face. This gap has grown tremendously since the pandemic. Aside from a national teacher shortage, the teachers that remain in schools are overworked. The increased rigor that districts place on students and teachers alike, create conditions that do not allot for the time needed to support Students with IEPs within the classroom.
